The art is mostly futuristic, but unofficial maps exist in a variety of styles.

There are 16 different game modes (including the classics: deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag, but including uncommon ones such as Nexball or Freeze Tag). The game also features 16 weapons with secondary fires, 18 official maps, serveral mutators that alter gameplay, and a complex HUD editor allowing for extreme customization.

Xonotic features integrated player statistics through the XonStat system, which tracks wins and losses, W/L and K/D ratios, average accuracies, and other stats.
